I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wanted to listen to my MP3 Player or iPhone using portable speakers without having to plug the device into an external speaker system!

Recently, I found the OmniTech mini speaker, the hottest tech toy on the market for under $10!

The sound is absolutely fantastic, incredible bass and no distortion – What makes these portable mini speakers so fantastic is that it can be charged so that is supplies it’s own power!

Portable mini speaker for iphone, droid

The instructions say that it takes four hours to charge, but it only took me two – simply connect the USB to your computer and it starts charging; once the red light turns blue, you’re ready to go. It comes with an on/off switch, volume control, and with a twist it expands to deliver you the bass and sound that you would expect to hear from a high end sound system!

This is a stand alone speaker and works with just about any device, iPhone, iPod and other MP3 players, mini recorders, Droid, etc and is available only at staples, for $9!

I searched the internet and could not find any reference to this portable mini speaker, but for your reference, the label says:

OmniTech
Model# 18721
Batt: Li-ion 3.7V/300mAh
Charge: DC 5V

I highly doubt these speakers will last long, so stop by now and pick one up – it makes an awesome gift!

Update: 12/06/09

Was shopping for Christmas Gifts at Toysrus and found these iHome portable mini speakers on sale for $19.99 and appear to be the exact same, just different name. Competitive out there! Here is a picture:
iHome Portable Multimedia Speakers

Although I could not find much information about OmniTech Speakers, I did find a ton on iHome by doing a search for iHM7BC Portable Multimedia Speaker; prices ranged from $19.95 to $29.95.

In short, $9 is a steal!!!

I have the Omnitech mini blue round speaker Model # 19644. It seems to have stopped working. Do you know who to contact for support? Where can another one be purchased?

  2. Paul Palmer says:

I had an Omnitech that began to cut out unpredictably. So I went searching for a way to open it up and maybe find a bad solder connection. I want to report that there are four small Phillips head screws at the base of the bellows. If you remove them with a jeweler’s screwdriver, the base comes off and you can see and hold the battery and the circuit board. I cleaned the ON-OFF switch with a drop of chlorinated solvent and reassembled it and it seems to be working fine.

Out of curiosity, I decided to see if anyone was sharing the same excitement I’ve had with my mini speaker. Seems that there are many names for it. Mine, like most of you guys had been purchased at a local staples in my Westchester, NY town.

I love gadgets and stumbled upon this “little beast” at the checkout, looked at it, said, “what the heck… it’s $10 and purchased it. Cutting to the chase…. and with the little twist to open it accordion style, the bass suddenly began to do its thing.

I brought them to the firehouse and let some of my friends listen to them. Needless to say, at least 10 of us went out that day to purchase one. Would’ve been more but, these things were either understocked or sold too fast.

I purchased this speaker around 2008?? In other words, I’ve had them for over a year perhaps, two.

Here again is the model number of my purchase Omnitech model #18721

Speaker is still running strong and I’ve never been able to discharge the battery completely. Doesn’t take long to charge and is over a year to 2 years old.

Downside….. it doesn’t expand as much as it did when when I first purchased it. Carelessly, I’ve been stretching it to regain its opening strength which pretty much worked and it’s still not broken.

  11. Jim says:

    Hi Rudy,

You don’t need to change the battery on the Portable Mini Speakers for iPhone Driod iPod MP3 – you simply plug in the usb cord into any computer and it charges in about 30 minutes!

  12. Lena says:

I happened to walk by a display with the mini ipod speakers while at Staples. Decided to try it because of it’s unbeliveably reasonable price. It is great!! I use it to play music to set the atmosphere for Bible study and other meetings at church and at home. The sound quality is amazing for such a tiny little thing. A few of my friends went right out and bought one after seeing and hearing mine, They agree that is wonderful technology. Thank you to whoever invented this.

  13. Sanity says:

im the easy tech at a staples in new york an i love these little guys we recently got a batch of colors red blue light blue green pink and purple. i have 5 of em never ha a problem but DOAs do happen, just like every other electronic device

  14. demi says:

hello ,everyone ,i from china ,our factory is manufacturer of mini speaker ,if you need ,welcome to purchase.

  15. Chiro says:

Okay, grading this on a curve for size and cost, it is fabulous, a great product with awesome sound, at least proportionally. Unfortunately, I am on the road a lot, and bring my laptop with me, which is a Dell XPS Gen2 with a great sound system for a lappy. The problem is my laptop is woefully antiquated for a gaming machine and NONE of the new ones I want have a sound to equal it. So I am trying to find a mini speaker that at leat rivals my current laptop for bass and overall sound quality.

Again, this is not a dig on this product, as I think it is excellent for what it is!

  16. Jim says:

    Hey JRC,

Sorry to hear you had so many problems! I’ve bought a few and they all worked like a charm for me. Must be the batch :)

  17. jrc says:

Bought one of these yesterday, along with the mini $20 player. NEITHER ONE WILL CHARGE FROM USB! Player will not stop flashing, frequently goes into crazy mode and flashes irregularly. Player plays some via earbuds, but not with the mini speaker.

Speaker will not change from red to blue no matter how long (6 hours) it is plugged into USB port on new Dell desktop. Speaker will not turn on.

I will return these junk pieces tomorrow, demand cash, no ‘replacement’ with more junk, and never, NEVER buy any more of “Omnitech” junk.

and i also have one version of mini speaker on our company. our company website [snip] and i could send some information of this products firstly if you are interested.

  19. Jim says:

The mini speaker works like a charm for me and impressively loud as well – you must have got a bad speaker. Have you tried it on something other than your phone? Perhaps your computer? I ask because what you are explaining happened to me on my treadmill – the cable was not plugged in all the way and push in while turning did the trick.

  20. Mariah says:

I just received this speaker from staples.com today. I charged it right away and opened it up and I can barely hear the sound with my mp3 player (sansa sandisk clip +) turned up as high as it goes and with the speaker volume turned up as high as it goes. I have to put my ear right up to the speaker to hear that is on at all. I tried plugging the earphone jack into my laptop and they were a little bit louder but not much and the sound was not as good of a quality as the laptop speakers at all. I’m hoping that I just got a defective speaker. I’m going to get another one to try.

I just bought one the other day. I am amazed at the sound quality! I was actually thinking of getting a blue tooth headset for my netbook but after purchasing this, there is no need!! I use hulu at night to fall asleep and I can place the speaker right beside my head and not disturb my husband. And incredible deal!

  24. Maggie says:

I bought mine at Staples on a Father’s Day rack. I use my MP3 for books and love to carry this little guy around with me; whether I’m doing the laundry or sitting outside on the porch. Incredible sound. I use it often and has yet to need a charge! I’m assuming the light goes red and it stops working. I’m baffled by the thing — it just keeps going and going!!

  25. Aaron says:

we have mini speaker in cheap price, about 3 dollars, if you have interesting about our product, please replay to me soon. We hope we have a good relation in cooperation.

  26. Slyks says:

I’ve used mine regularly since Nov 2009. Sadly It no longer works. The green light still burns red after charging for 12 hours. I guess I’m headed back to Staples for #2. I’m having trouble living without my Non-earbudded tunes.

no joke…this speaker is stellar! i bought one thinking “well, if i toss it, it was only $10.00”. WELL, liked it so much, i went back to get two more, but staples was all sold out. my luck. anyone who got one, like me, knows that this was a great investment. i use it at work with my ipod nano.

  30. Matt says:

Hiya. I work at Staples, and I bought many of these for gifts and a couple for myself after hearing from a customer that they worked well. I use it for my droid playing Pandora radio… I love it!!! Ive still yet to need to charge the battery too, pretty dang good for 10 bucks. Unfortunately they clearance d out after the holiday season, and are not available anymore. They may be back next holiday season with our promotional products!

    Good luck!

  31. Jim says:

    Hi Don,

The only model number is what I have listed above. They were next to the cash register.

Also – You can get the same thing at Toysrus, you’ll just have to pay more.

They are awesome, no? Amazing that such a small device can produce such sound!

  32. Don Kennedy says:

Do you know the Staples model number – I got one at Xmas and love it too. Should have bought two or three but had not heard it. It works better than I could have imagined. This is hands down the best, easiest speaker system out there – and have been burned a few times by more $$$ speaker systems from the apple store. That sounded good but where to hard to work. Any chance you know the model number from Staples – I have asked at the store I purchase from and well I am speaking – star wars to them. Any help would be great!

  33. Salty says:

Ya. I totally approve and recommend this device to anyone looking for an inexpensive portable speaker. It has great range and the volume get’s plenty loud.

  34. Jeff says:

I stumbled upon this deal at staples too and in the 5 days since I bought it it has performed perfectly. Its a quick and convenient way of sharing your music with others around you. My son snagged it from me to plug into his DS, it gave the games nice bass sounds. I should have bought one for him too.

  35. Jim says:

    Scott,

Good eye – That is hilarious! I didn’t catch that – the print was too small for me ;) – I scanned the instructions you refer to for all to see and included it below:

Mini speakers for the droid phone

    Thanks!

    Jim

  36. Scott says:

I purchased one last night and listened to it most of the day today from a full charge state. Amazing it lasted that long and has a great sound for its size. I was playing my Sansa e280 with the awesome Rockbox firmware so I could really tweak in the EQ settings since I found the mid frequencies a bit emphasized. I will be buying 3 more tomorrow – two for kids stocking stuffers and one (spare) for me.

I got quite a laugh from the instructions Safety Rules. Bullet 3 was the best, “Please note that this speaker is not edible and should not be placed in your mouth”. Really? I mean, REALLY?!?! What a riot… Those couple minutes of laughter with my teens when sharing this was worth the $10 alone. :)

  37. Rickey Gregg says:

Picked on up today and it really does produce good sound. I have had larger travel speakers that did not sound half as good as this bargain priced item.
