Free Credit Score Online
Many of you may be aware that you can obtain a free credit score online but not sure how difficult it is or how to obtain these reports. It is not an easy process, but here is how I did it. Warning: there are a ton of sites out there claiming to offer this information when in fact, they are gathering all your personal information and then reselling it!
The big three credit reporting agencies put together a website that allows you 1 free credit score online per year. This is mandated by the federal government, but, the government did mandate they give you a credit score number, so you will receive all your information less the credit score number.
Navigating the site and trying to get your free credit score online is not easy. You have to remember not to close the browser window or you’ll lose your session. You’ll be presented with three options and you WILL want to check all three credit reporting agencies or you won’t get your free 3 credit reports.
Free online credit score
The first potion is from Experian, and if you click on that it give you a reminder how to get back to the main page (the page from which you selected the tree agencies). Experian went very smooth and besides trying to sell me on a credit score, I was able to find the * No Thanks, Just give me my credit report * option at the bottom right corner of the screen.
Equifax was horrible in the way of navigation and had errors processing my free credit score online. Also something you’ll want to note is that when it takes you to a blank page like it did me (error obviously), you have to click the back button twice or you’ll be stuck on that page. I never did obtain my report and now need to contact the site.
TransUnion was just as bad and said it could not verify my ID and to call.
So, I called and ordered my reports online; Not a fun process! The automated lady could not understand anything I was saying and had me repeat myself way too many times. I found myself stressing out over my free credit score online and wondering why things have to be so difficult!
To Request your Credit Report by Phone:
* Call 1-877-322-8228
* You will go through a simple verification process over the phone.
The official site is: annualcreditreport.com but don’t take my word for it, visit http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.shtm and follow their link to annualcreditreport just to make sure you have it right.
The one thing that got me was they required you to enter your full social security number, something I thought was no longer allowed!
